An 11 Year Old Hacked the Websites having Election Information
A pair of election security hacking demonstrations set up for adults and kids alike at Def Con 2018 at Las Vegas offered up some frightening revelations about America’s voting infrastructure.
While kids as young as 11 found breaking into websites for the Florida’s Secretary of State relatively easy; the “Voting Machine Hacking Village” received generally negative comments from the National Association of Secretaries of State which said -
"the approach taken by DEFCON is that it utilizes a pseudo-environment which in no way replicates state election systems, networks or physical access to voting machines and creating ‘mock’ election office networks and voter registration databases for participants to defend and/or hack is also unrealistic.”
About 89% of the 47 kids that participated could break into these virtual websites. Even though officials from big corporations are not too worried about the effects these vulnerabilities might have on the truly important elections, they’re still very much aware and concerned about the risks. Microsoft has already said that it has detected evidence of attempted Russian interference into three campaigns already in the 2018 election cycle.
