Twitter will Lock your Account if you Change your Display Name to Elon Musk
As a measure of fighting against cryptocurrency, scammers are leaving deceptive links as replies in Musk’s tweets. Twitter after its recent update automatically locks unverified and bot accounts that change their display name to Elon Musk. So if you have an unverified account that is if your account is not linked/associated with your contact number, changing your display name to SpaceX and Tesla CEO will result in immediately blocking the account.
If you want to regain access to your account, all you have to do is pass Twitter’s CAPTCHA test and provide a phone number. A Twitter spokesperson said in a statement given to The Verge -
"As part of our continuing efforts to combat spam and malicious activity on our service, we’re testing new measures to challenge accounts that use terms commonly associated with spam campaigns. We are continually refining these detections based on changes in spammy activity.”
If you want to keep the display name of your account as Elon Musk, you must first ensure the authenticity of your account. This is because it is designed to combat the bot accounts that imitate Musk’s Twitter profile.
Often, the scams are easy to spot to those fluent in online fraud, but they’re designed to fool the unwary. Usually, a random account with ‘Elon Musk’ as the display name and photo will pop up as a reply which in turn makes the scam tweet look like a thread. Such tweets often use the same format. It goes like users are offered a rare chance to get in on the ground floor of a new type of blockchain technology, and all they have to do to get rich quick is fork over some cash in exchange for tokens of a new cryptocurrency they’ve never heard of.
Twitter in March said how it is trying to reduce the number of scams on its platform. It also mentioned the use of signals to prevent engagement of scam accounts with others in a deceptive manner. But the problem only intensified.
Twitter recently made a statement saying -
“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re continuing to fight spam and other malicious behaviors on our service. This is an evolving challenge. As such, we’re rapidly developing our response to be more agile and effective in detecting these behaviors and enforcing our policies — particularly as it relates to deceptive cryptocurrency accounts in violation of our spam rules.”
