Apple Updates App Store Guidelines to Ban Cryptomining Apps
Apple has cracked down on cryptocurrency mining apps by banning them from its app store, citing the excessive battery-drainage even on high-end smartphones. This move seems to be aimed at those apps which furtively use a smartphone’s resources to mine bitcoins in the background without the user’s consent. Cryptojacking is the practice of inserting malicious code into software and apps to generate cryptocurrency by using the computing power of visitors’ devices. Apple's iOS developer guidelines previously stated that apps should "use power efficiently" and shouldn't "rapidly drain battery, generate excessive heat, or put unnecessary strain on device resources", as well as forbidding apps from running "unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining." However, the new guidelines state that all mining has to be done off-device; that apps cannot offer users cryptocurrency for completing tasks such as downloading other apps etc.
