in order to allow its users to shop through smartphone cameras. With this update, users will be able to point their smartphone cameras at a pair of shoes, the bar-code on the bottom of a shampoo bottle, or any other object in the world.
The partnership will allow them to compete for social media-driven sales
against rivals Instagram
. When users of Snapchat
scan an object or bar-code, a window will pop up which will show similar items.
Initially, only a small number of users will be able to access this feature as an initial trial run. It is estimated that about 78% of US internet users are said to be in the age group of 18 to 24 years.
