Google has shut down its consumer version of Google +. It has also tightened its data-sharing policies after it recognised that a "bug" has potentially exposed user data. Private profile data of about 5,00,000 users have been exposed to external developers.
The issue was initially observed in the month of March as part of the review process regarding how Google shares its data with other applications. The regulatory issues were not disclosed by Google with the fear related to regulatory scrutiny, citing unnamed sources etc.
Google also feared that disclosure of this information would create comparison with Facebook's leakage of user information.
