WhatsApp is only mirroring payments data and it does not seem to comply with regulations. A strict warning was issued by RBI stating that all the data related to payments must be stored in India.
It was seen that MasterCard, Visa and Google have demanded the extension of mandatory data localisation rules by a period of 12 months. Many companies failed to meet the deadlines however, WhatsApp claimed that it had complied with the guidelines.
However, WhatsApp is said to be unclear regarding whether the payments data will be kept in India or outside. Serious concerns are getting raised from NCPI. WhatsApp has been trying to launch its payment services since the month of February. Currently, WhatsApp UPI is in beta mode.
